One afternoon, Jamahl stumbled across Breanna’s profile on the social network Tagged. He froze; “something about her picture resonated with me. I decided to reach out”. The pair started as friends, but soon the conversations and emotions deepened, and they were dating, thousands of miles apart, never having met in person.


The following summer, they physically met for the first time, putting to bed both their lingering fears that the other didn’t exist. For the next four years, the pair travelled to see each other annually. On 25 March 2018, Breanna’s birthday, they got engaged, with a plan for Breanna to join Jamahl in the US. “I’d never dreamt of going to the US. It was never part of my plan. But now, because he is there, I am like, ‘oh my God I just want to go',” she continues. Then, Covid-19 hit, and it separated the couple again, forcing them to return to the cold, virtual world where their relationship started. However, Breanna and Jamahl found some refuge in spirituality. Becoming closer in this way helped them transcend the physical distance between them. "Every morning at 6:30, we call each other and go through a prayer from Breanna’s devotion book and apply it to our days," says Jamahl. "It has brought us much closer.
