“It was love at first sight,” explains Mary about how they both met. She was visiting her sister in Portugal, right where Antonio lives. The couple spent just three days together and decided to start a relationship from then.

“I didn’t want to leave,” says Mary, “we were scared we would never see each other again.” The pair decided to date and later that year reunited in person in the US, where Mary was travelling for a wedding, then she traveled to meet his family and friends. Antonio traveled to Brazil to do the same in March 2020 and flew back to Portugal a day before Brazilians borders closed without knowing that would be the last time they would see each other in person.

The couple already have experienced a long distance relationship, but the uncertainty Covid brought created new difficulties in their relationship. “I think it is a challenge, and it’s a lot of patience too. This requires a lot of love, so we are growing as a couple and we are trying to understand each other, because even though we are not together, we are trying to see each other everytime we can. We watch movies together, sometimes we sleep together, so we are trying to understand how the situation can make us grow as a couple." says Mary.
