“[Andrea] caught my attention with her white hair. She seemed different,” remembers Virginia. The couple met at a friend’s birthday party in Lima at the start of 2020. “She approached me to see if I was smoking rolling tobacco, and we started talking,” Andrea asked Virginia if she'd ever been with a girl. Virginia hadn’t, but she found herself in the bathroom applying lipstick, "I thought damn, I'm putting on lipstick for this girl”. Before Andrea left the party, she managed to get Virginia's number but didn't message because she thought Virginia wasn’t into girls. The next day, to her surprise, Virginia woke up worrying about whether Andrea would text her. She decided to message instead and told Andrea she was thinking of her.
“These kinds of things just don’t happen,” says Andrea. The pair arranged to go out again and met Virginia's friends at a party after. Andrea had been debating whether to try and kiss Virginia all night. And eventually, in the smoking area, she did. A week or two after, they went out again. This time, Virginia made the first move. “That’s when I decided I liked her, and I said, ‘let’s do it. Let’s try,” remembers Virginia. It was early February 2020, a fortnight before the first Covid-19 lockdown. “We were happy at the beginning. We drank beer and laughed all day. It was a wonderful two weeks [before the lockdown],” remembers Andrea. Virginia asked Andrea to be her girlfriend on 14 March, two days before the lockdown started and the same day as Andrea’s sister's wedding, which they went to together. Little did they know, an awkward photograph of them partying at the wedding would be the only evidence they had of Virginia meeting Andrea’s family for their visa application.
“We went to my sister's wedding, and the next day they decreed quarantine. I couldn't have been happier. It was perfect. [I thought] nothing bad will happen because I love her and everything is wonderful,” says Andrea. They locked down together at Virginia's apartment. But, the intensity of the situation left them both desperate for space. And, when Andrea moved out following six weeks of quarantine, they stopped speaking for a while. After a couple of months, Virginia reached out. But, it was lockdown again, and they couldn’t see each other. “I wanted to,” says Andrea. “And months before, we had been walking and found a plant. I remembered what it was, and I bought the damn plant when the quarantine began. One day I said, ‘you know what, I'm going to pick up the plant, and I'm going to leave it for her’. So I told Virginia that there was a Rappi (delivery service) downstairs, and then the Rappi was me. And we got closer again from there.” Before they knew it, they had returned to the magic of their relationship’s beginnings. Things became more serious from there.
