Kirsty was working as an au pair in the US when she met Arrie online in December 2018. She only had three months left in the US before she had to return home. But, the couple got close. Kirsty’s visa expired and, back home, she attempted to apply for an F-1 student visa to return to the US. Immigration denied it.

Arrie didn’t want to lose her. He followed her home, flying to South Africa to meet her family and friends. In June 2019, on the day he was due to return to the US, he proposed. “I had so much adrenaline,” he remembers. “If she said ‘no’, I would have a 36-hour flight thinking about how she rejected me”. Kirsty, of course, said, “yes”. The couple didn’t realise then, but that would be the last time they touched or held each other for over a year. “We did not get to spend more than three hours together, in person, knowing how it felt to be engaged,” says Arrie.
